Company History
Maybe it was the stress of gas shortages or a detour away from discotheques back in 1978, but for whatever reason, the nation fell in love with running that year. Thousands of Americans began taking to the street as running hit its stride like never before.
Portland, Oregon was one of the cities most impacted by this run-away trend. That same year, two entrepreneurs in a small Portland suburb began making nylon running shorts out of their garages. Turns out they had selected the right place to do business. A couple of young, budding athletic shoe and apparel companies in Portland named Nike and adidas quickly scooped up all of the product they could make and marketed them under their own labels.
As the two business partners saw the success of their products develop under these labels, they decided to debut "Sportco" and take the label from private to public. In the early 1980s, Sportco began making shorts and singlets under its own name and continued to grow. In 1986, the company acquired a Boulder, Colorado business called International Sports, a maker of split shorts and singlets. As Sportco incorporated these new products into the company¹s line, they also combined the names, and InSport was born.
InSport came into its own in the late 1980s and early 90s by diversifying into Fitness, cycling, triathlon apparel; the brand became a symbol for serious athletes. In fact, the triathlon apparel was developed for, and marketed by ironman Dave Scott during the height of his career.
While others became apparel for the masses, InSport headed in a different direction. The brand became specialized and highly technical by experimenting with innovative fabrics never before used in the marketplace. The company purposefully steered away from producing shoes and concentrated on what it does best developing apparel that incorporates functionality and performance that serious athletes demand.
As the company grew, so did its ties with the community. InSport is dedicated to working together with its business partners in its nearby communities and nearly 95 percent of InSport's products are made in the United States. That commitment gives the company the ability to maintain tight control of its inventory, operations and product quality. That quality also led to InSport recently landing a contract to produce apparel for the United States Army.
In 2002, InSport reinvigorated its position as a leading manufacturer of athletic apparel by relaunching the InSport brand; complete with a fast new logo. This rededication to its relationship with everyday athletes strengthens its reputation as a leader of technically inspired apparel for athletes and exercise enthusiasts who seek to continually push their limits.
