Reebok Then and Now
Reebok's United Kingdom-based ancestor company was founded for one of the best reasons possible: athletes wanted to run faster. So, in the 1890s, Joseph William Foster made some of the first known running shoes with spikes in them. By 1895, he was in business making shoes by hand for top runners; and before long his fledgling company, J.W. Foster and Sons, developed an international clientele of distinguished athletes. The family-owned business proudly made the running shoes worn in the 1924 Summer Games by the athletes celebrated in the film Chariots of Fire.
In 1958, two of the founder's grandsons started a companion company that came to be known as Reebok, named after an African gazelle.
In 1979, Paul Fireman, a partner in an outdoor sporting goods distributorship, spotted Reebok shoes at an international trade show. He negotiated for the North American distribution license and introduced three running shoes in the U.S. that year. At $60, they were the most expensive running shoes on the market.
By 1981, Reebok's sales exceeded $1.5 million, but a dramatic move was planned for the next year. In 1982, Reebok introduced the first athletic shoe designed especially for women; a shoe for a hot new fitness exercise called aerobic dance.
The shoe was called the Freestyle™, and with it Reebok anticipated and encouraged three major trends that transformed the athletic footwear industry: the aerobic exercise movement, the influx of women into sports and exercise and the acceptance of well-designed athletic footwear by adults for street and casual wear.
Explosive growth followed, which Reebok fueled with product extensions - new categories in which it also became a leader. The Freestyle™ is now a "Classic" and is Reebok's best selling athletic shoe of all time. Reebok's performance aerobic shoes have progressed through several generations.
In the midst of surging sales in 1985, Reebok completed its initial public offering (stock symbol is NYSE: RBK). In the late 1980s, Reebok began an aggressive expansion into overseas markets. Its products are now available in more than 170 countries and are sold through a network of independent and Reebok-owned distributors. Reebok is distributed in the following countries in Europe :

Creating innovative products that generate excitement in the marketplace has been a central corporate strategy ever since Reebok introduced the Freestyle shoe. In the late 1980s, a particular fertile period began with The Pump® technology and continues today, with breakthrough concepts and technologies for a host of sports and fitness activities.
In the late 1990s, Reebok made a strategic commitment to align its brand with a select few of the world's most talented, exciting and cutting-edge athletes. For several years now, the company has focused on those athletes who represent the top echelon of sports and fitness, among them Allen Iverson and Venus Williams.
Allen Iverson
When Reebok studied the deep and talented roster of prospective NBA draft selections in 1996, guard Allen Iverson was clearly the person it believed would generate the greatest excitement on the court and in the marketplace. After five successful years as on and off-court partners, Reebok and the NBA's reigning MVP signed a lifetime contract in November 2001. The deal provides Iverson remains a Reebok endorsed athlete throughout his professional career.
Venus Williams
Reebok signed Venus Williams to her first endorsement contract in 1995, which is the only agreement she has maintained with an athletic footwear and apparel brand. Williams, whose journey to the top of the tennis world began against the humble backdrop of the Compton section of Los Angeles where she grew up, has become one of the best female tennis players in the world. In December 2000, Reebok signed the tennis superstar to a multi-year contract extension.
NFL
Also in December 2000, Reebok and the National Football League announced the formation of an exclusive partnership that serves as a foundation of the NFL's restructured consumer products business. The NFL granted a 10-year exclusive license to Reebok beginning in the 2002 NFL season to manufacture, market and sell NFL licensed merchandise for all 32 NFL and the World League (Europe) teams.
The license includes on-field uniforms, sideline apparel, practice apparel, footwear and an NFL-branded apparel line. The agreement also gives Reebok exclusive rights to develop a new line of NFL fitness equipment. Reebok will also create a new market segmentation that will include several new product categories, such as Equipment and Classics. For the 2001 season, Reebok supplies and markets uniforms and sideline apparel for 26 teams. It also sells NFL and team apparel at retail.
Fitness Water
Continuing its commitment to innovation, Reebok partnered with Clearly Canadian Beverage Corporation to launch Reebok Fitness Water in North America in April 2001. An enhanced water beverage featuring essential vitamins, minerals and electrolytes, Reebok Fitness Water meets the needs of today's active, health conscious, sport and fitness consumers.
NBA
In August 2001, Reebok formed a 10-year strategic partnership with the NBA under which Reebok will design, manufacture, sell and market licensed merchandise for the NBA, the Women's NBA (WNBA) and the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), the NBA's fledgling minor league.
Beginning in the 2004-05 season, Reebok will have the exclusive rights in North America to supply and market all on-court apparel, including uniforms, shooting shirts, warm-ups, authentic and replica jerseys and practice gear for all NBA, WNBA and NBDL teams. Reebok will also have exclusive rights, with limited exceptions, to design, manufacture, market and sell headwear, T-shirts, fleece and other apparel products for all teams in most channels of distributions.
Reebok will also develop, market and sell an exclusive line of NBA-branded basketball shoes and expand their line of Reebok Classic fashion products to incorporate NBA-branded apparel.
Today, Reebok International Ltd. has approximately 6,000 employees worldwide, has established itself on the major playing fields of the world and is generating significant sales in all major sports categories. Thus, Reebok, after more than 20 years of spectacular growth around the world, has focused on even greater accomplishments, continued innovation and boundless excitement.
Technology
Reebok places a strong emphasis on technology and has continued to incorporate various proprietary performance technologies into its footwear, focusing on cushioning, stability and lightweight features and into its apparel, for moisture management, health and comfort.
Reebok's most significant footwear technology is DMX. DMX provides superb cushioning through a unique moving air system. Since its introduction in 1997, this proprietary technology has been expanded and enhanced to meet the performance demands of a variety of sports and fitness activities.
In 1998, Reebok further expanded its offering of products with DMX technology by offering DMX Lite footwear. Fusion DMX Lite technology combines the cushioning benefits of DMX with the lightweight advantages of 3D ULTRALITE, an extremely lightweight, flexible footwear material.
In 1999, Reebok launched Hydromove, its unique apparel concept based on comfort and thermo-regulation. Its structure allows the body heat to push perspiration through the fabric for rapid evaporation. The athlete remains dry and his body temperature remains stable. This delays the onset of fatigue and also helps to improve performance.
Human Rights Programs
The Reebok Human Rights Award - Established in 1988, the program honors individuals 30 years of age or younger who, against great odds and often at great personal risk, have made significant contributions to the field of human rights. The Award aims to encourage young activists by attracting international attention to both the recipients and their issues. By 2001, 72 men and women from 36 countries have received the Award.
These young heroes have ranged from a defender of street children in Guatemala, to an activist who works to educate Togo's youth about human rights and democracy, to an advocate for battered women in the United States. Award recipients receive a $50,000 grant from the Reebok Human Rights Foundation to help further their work. This is the only corporate Award program dedicated to young human rights activists.
Witness - Reebok, British performer and artist Peter Gabriel, and the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights founded Witness in March 1992. The international program supplies the tools of modern communications - video cameras, computers and facsimile machines - to human rights organizations around the world so activists working on the front lines can gather visual evidence and document human rights abuses.
The Reebok Foundation - Through an extensive grant-making program, Reebok reaches out to projects in the Greater Boston area that deal with young people at risk. The Foundation also supports key national (U.S.) agencies involved in civil rights, such as The National Council of LaRaza and the National Urban league, and is an active member of both the Social Venture Network and Businesses for Social Responsibility.
Child-Labor Free Soccer Balls - In 1996, Reebok announced that it would label all its soccer balls with a guarantee that the balls are make without child labor, following completion of a unique factory in Pakistan, where all soccer ball manufacturing takes place under one roof. A rigorous monitoring program with both internal and external procedures ensures that children are not employed in the factory and that no soccer ball panels leave the premises to be stitched. In Pakistan's Sialkot region, soccer ball panels have historically been transported from factories to stitching centers where it is estimated as many as 20 percent of stitchers have been children
