Hi all,

Just wondering how do you guys breathe when you're running? Do you keep your mouth closed or open? As for me, I'm used to opening my mouth while running, looks funny and weird!! (lol) but I'm more comfy with that. But is there really a proper breathing technique while running?!

I don't think there is right or wrong way of doing it while running. Just do what really works for you!

I try not to think about the proper breathing thing too much as I'm afraid I might get too preoccupied about it and I might not be focusing on the running itself.

for me breathing shouldn't be taken for granted, I believe that breathing fully will help in having a good performance when running. You see most of us ignore this thing but really it is something essential especially for athletes. So one tip I can give you is to breathe deeply enough, I basically follow these stages namely -; inhaling, then full pause, exhaling, and empty pause. I read that this helps increase oxygen in the blood.

My Dad told me that proper breathing is very important, he always say that I must inhale slowly using my nose and exhale using my mouth in that way oxygen can be filtered...

No proper way or exact way of breathing but I think you should do it in such a way that you are comfortable. Anyway jogging is suppose o be a fun and rejuvenating experience so do it your own style!

Breathing can be different from person to person. There is no proper or required way to breathe while running. Just do it in a way that you are comfortable and everything will be fine for you.

haven't really consciously thought of it. but since you asked, i realized i breathe with my mouth slightly opened.
and i do agree with the others though, whichever way you're comfortable, you'll be fine

Yeah, I've heard of the proper breathing techniques or exercise before. And if I remembered it correctly, if you are not breathing properly, you will notice that you will have a much shorter run or lack of air easily. I know that's an article I've read on the internet, I'll try to find that again and maybe repost in this forum.

I wasn't paying attention about my breathing when i run. Guess I was too occupied with what my legs are doing and the music from my ipod. If there is really this proper breathing technique while running I would want to know it. Maybe it could bring about better effects.

i did some research, aka googling
here are what i learned about proper breathing while running

  • breathe on cadence
    • to maintain a proper breathing cadence is to breathe in or out every time your dominant foot contacts the ground. it means that each time your dominant foot touches the ground you will either be breathing in or breathing out.
  • breathe through both the mouth and nose
    • this is probably why some people run with their mouth open, because they breathe through it too
    • breathing through both the nostrils and mouth can result in more oxygen through the airways. oxygen should come from the diaphragm and not the chest. when done correctly, the stomach should contract in and out. improper use of this technique may add extra strain to your shoulders
  • inhale, full pause, exhale, empty pause
    • breathing using all four stages: inhaling, full pause, exhaling, and empty pause helps increase oxygen in the blood. more oxygen in your blood, translates to the less fatigue and more mental alertness

Nice post stride. I never knew there was this proper way of breathing. I just do it the natural way. To tell you honestly I don't even notice my breathing when I am jogging. again thanks for he info. I am now informed and perhaps do it according to your post.

am always glad to be of help. i guess the very basic thing everyone -; runner or not -; should know about breathing is that oxygen must come from the diaphragm and not the chest, as i've posted earlier. notice that when the oxygen comes from the stomach, the shoulders will be moving whereas if oxygen comes from the diaphragm, the stomach will contract

I'm also doing that, because every time I run I experience some difficulty in breathing. But the proper way of breathing is you have to use your nose in inhaling while use your mouth in exhaling. And we really need to practice it.
