Levels - Beginner
A lot of people take up running only to drop it later on out of frustration. They usually complain about how painful such an exercise could be. But it shouldn't be, really. It's just that nobody taught them how to run correctly. This section will deal with that and a lot more.
First of all when you are just starting to run again after being a potato couch for many years, you should never overwork yourself. This is usually why a lot of beginning runners stop running after only one session. They overexert themselves up to a point where their legs and lungs start to hurt already. Do not be a victim of this. Instead, start from a level where you can run comfortably and try to build it up as you progress in the succeeding weeks of your training.
Another reason why a lot of beginners drop out after a number of sessions is because while they have definite goals for running, they do not see the means to achieve it. For example, you run because you want to lose weight. But it would be hard to achieve that if you do it only when you feel like doing it or if your schedule permits it. It would therefore be essential to have a Training Program. With careful planning, you can eventually find time for running. Just keep in mind to try to achieve your long term goal through short term ones. It is better to do that rather than trying to finish a whole program in a week which will leave you sore weeks after that.
It would also help if you get a running partner. An ideal running partner would be someone who is more or less at the same level as you are. He or she would serve to motivate you at times when you want to give up on your training program already and go back to your sedentary life. Or you could also consider joining running clubs. There are a lot of them out there and it is just a matter of finding them. Chances are that they cater to your particular needs, especially if you are a woman and believe that other women would understand you better than men. Running clubs are much bigger support systems and from there, you might even find a good running partner. Check out the internet to find out about the running club in your area.
Women, children and the elderly have even more particular needs which cannot be covered in this section. They are further discussed in the Running for Kids, Women and Senior Citizens page.
