Running - Middle Distance

Running - Middle Distance Multi distance track events exceed the distance covered by sprints up to 5000 meters. With multi distance Track Events, 800 m, 1500 m, and the 3000 m are the standard distances.

Middle Distance Events

600 m
This middle distance event is primarily used by 800 m runners as an off season training and by sprinters who wish to test their endurance levels. Johnny Gray of USA and Ana Fidelia Quirot of Cuba hold the record for the men and women divisions, respectively.

800 m
The 800 m event is an Olympic event consisting of two rounds in a 400 m track. This track event has long been known to bring exhaustion to runners. Runners begin in allotted lanes and must remain there for the first 100 m. After which, they can change lanes as long as they do not push or obstruct their competitors.

1500 m
The 1500 m or the metric mile as it is called in the United States covers three-quarter laps around a standard Olympic-size track. In this running event, speed and aerobic conditioning are necessary. This event is a tactical middle distance track event, and is one the most difficult to compete in.

1600 m
This middle distance track event consists of four rounds in a 400 m track. This is the standard distance in the college and international levels, and is commonly raced in the middle or high school levels as a replacement for the mile.

Mile
The mile equals to 1760 yards, and is raced on world class levels but usually on select occasions only. In 1976, the International Amateur Athletic Foundation recognized world records for metric distances, and gave immunity to the mile track event.

3000 m
The 3000 m is a standard race in the United States and is common in the high school and collegiate levels. This race requires 7.5 rounds in a 400 m track. Superior aerobic conditioning and supporting race tactics can supplement the lack of natural quickness because this track event only requires minimal speed.

Anaerobic respiration, racing tactics, aerobic conditioning, adrenaline, and developed fast and slow twitch muscles are the biological factors that goes with a middle distance racer’s performance.
