Power Running
Power Running is the training method being pushed by former United States Special Forces soldier Richard Gibbens. This focuses on a person's physiology and his or her training to improve his Running performance. Aside from that, emphasis is given to the latest research in fitness training.
Beginnings
The roots of Power Running began in the 1980s when Gibbens was in the US Special Forces. He wanted to maximize his personal fitness level but found the same kind of information in the books and magazines that he read.
In order to learn more about fitness training, he took up a degree in exercise science. After leaving the Special Forces, he chose his own training method based on the more popular Running books at the time. Following what was written in the books ended up with him injuring himself.
Because of the injury, he tried to do his own research and delve more on what would later be formulated as Power Running. He began to question the conventional wisdom about fitness training. That was when he came up with the model that focuses on one's muscle power. The model argued that the muscles are the limiting factor to one's performance and not his or her aerobic system.
Physiology & Training
The two main focal points of Power Running are the person's physiology and his or her training. In the physiology, Gibbens tries to study closer how a person's body functions. In connection to Power Running, the research of exercise physiology studies the physiological effects of exercise as well as the specific study of the body's unique responses to training.
Meanwhile, the training part of Power Running presents several recommendations in one's training program in Running. Aside from that, there are also things like a background on the theory of Running, a question on whether one has to increase his or her mileage, strength training, as well as other valuable information that can help a runner in the sport.
According to Gibbens, since his method doesn't follow conventional wisdom, he is sure to be criticized a lot by other people.
