Running Shoes – Finding the Right Fit
Before even running to the store and buying those cool Running Shoes you saw on TV, it is important that you get to know your feet better first. Being the most battered part of your running activity, it deserves to be your primary consideration when getting a new pair. But how and why should you do that?
Not all feet are the same. Some have normal arches, others have narrow ones, while several others have none at all. In the world of podiatry, or the medical care and treatment of the foot, they are called Neutral, Supinate and Overpronate feet, respectively. Each of them needs a different type of shoe.
But how do you know which type of feet do you have? A simple test could be done in the bathroom wherein you would make a mark on the tiles with your wet feet. If the arch seems to be too narrow, then you are most likely a Supinator. It would be best to use the cushioned type of shoes. If, however, your footprint shows the complete outline of your feet, then you are most probably an Overpronator. Your foot type would need Motion Control shoes to support your feet. But if your feet show a normal outline, then you have a normal or Neutral feet. Neutral feet do not need any special kind of shoes unless you wish to take up sprinting or any fast-paced training where Lightweight Shoes would be ideal for you. Not familiar with some of the terms here? Read more about them in our Running Shoes – Types section.
Aside from knowing your type of feet, then time would also play an important factor when buying a new pair of Running Shoes. Do your shopping in the afternoon where your feet would have already expanded from the day’s walking. This is an advice repeated over and over again but is always practical to follow, even when fitting in shoes for other activities.
Finally, keep in mind that it is called fitting a pair of shoes because that’s what you should exactly do. Do not try or even buy a pair of shoes only because of the design, the cost or because it is endorsed by your favorite athlete. Remember that your Running Shoes are the single, most important investment you have to make when taking up Running as a sport, so make sure that you are getting the right one for you.
