33rd Berlin Marathon Starts on Sunday

The 33rd Berlin Marathon, Germany's famous road race, have drawn 39,636 running enthusiasts,147 hand bikers, and 40 wheelchair athletes from 105 countries and is expected to attract one million spectators on Sunday, September 24.
Top runners will be battling for the top spot and the 50,000 euros prize money. Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie is aiming to finish the race in 2:04:55 hours which Kenyan Paul Tergat, his rival, had attained in 2003. He will also compete with Kenyan Sammy Korir who placed second to Tergat in 2003. Meanwhile, three-time Olympic medalist Gete Wami from Ethiopia will be joining the marathon for the first time. Also in the race is Paris Marathon winner Kenyan Salina Kosgei.
"We are the fourth biggest marathon in the world and it is our aim to keep this position on Sunday," said Rudiger Otto, the managing director of event organizer SCC-Running. The Berlin Marathon is a part of the new World Marathon Majors series which also include the BAA Marathon, the Flora London Marathon, and the ING New York City Marathon.
