Raising Funds for the British Heart Foundation

THURSDAY, 29 MARCH 2007

Sunday 22 April is fast approaching and for those who secured a place at the 2007 Flora London Marathon training should be well underway.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is aiming to raise £860,000 at this year’s event but the charity needs more support to achieve this and help beat heart disease. If you have secured a place in the 2007 event, the BHF urges you to consider joining their committed team of Heart Runners.

There are many reasons why you might want to join the BHF’s team of Heart Runners – you might have a friend or loved one who’s had heart problems, you yourself might have made a recovery from a heart condition or maybe it’s as simple as knowing that these conditions are still more likely to kill than any other serious illness – including cancer.

Heather Manson has listened to her heart and is running the marathon for the BHF and her daughter, Kendall, who was born with a hole in her heart.

Heather said “Not being an experienced runner the training’s really tough, especially when it’s raining. But I’ll do it for Kendall and all the other children with heart problems. Kendall is my inspiration and her support is keeping me going. I know the day itself will be emotional and I think there will be a few tears - doing this makes me realize how far we’ve come. Thoughts of the most important people in my life will help get me to the finish line!”

The BHF recognizes that running the marathon can be a daunting prospect and has a dedicated Heart Runners support team who will be there every step of the way. All Heart Runners will receive:
  • Dedicated fundraising support, including access to a fundraising helpline, monthly newsletters and online fundraising facilities
  • A welcome pack, which contains, amongst other things, training plans and fundraising ideas
  • Training support provided by TrailPlus, including personalized plans and training days A Heart Runner running top
  • Support on the weekend of the race – cheering points along the way and a post-race recovery party (complete with masseurs) to celebrate your achievement
Julie Sorrell, Head of Events at the British Heart Foundation said: “If you’ve decided that 2007 will be the year you tackle the London Marathon, then joining the Heart Runners team is a special way to honor someone close to you. But you won’t just be doing it for them; your hard work will help the thousands of men, women and children with life-threatening heart problems that depend on our support each year. Join the Heart Runners team – together we can beat heart disease.”
