Marathon Runners Subject for Heart Research
FRIDAY, 29 JUNE 2007
Marathon runners are going to be subject of a heart research at Royal Perth Hospital. The research will test the runners for chemical related with heart attacks.
In lieu with the research, Associate Professor Daniel Fatovich is inviting Perth Marathon participants to donate blood samples before and after next week's race. The samples will be use to determine traces of a chemical called "troponin", which suggests death of heart muscle.
According to Fatovich, current studies revealed that vigorous exercise can establish troponin levels in the blood. He also said that they aim to get a hundred samples out of the 250 registered runners, though he admitted that it still depends on how many will be willing to give blood.
