Kiprop, Kibet Battle it Out at BUPA Great Run
THURSDAY, 25 OCTOBER 2007
Commonwealth 10,000m champion Boniface Kiprop will confront World Marathon champion Luke Kibet for the BUPA Great South Run title next Sunday, October 28 in Portsmouth.
The showdown of 22-year-old Ugandan’s spar and the Kenyan will be one of the highlights in the 10-mile race. He was added to the elite field over the weekend.
While Kibet will be stepping down in distance running after his runaway victory in Osaka two months ago, Kiprop will be stepping up from his favorite event.
Kiprop is familiar to British road races, having finished runner-up twice in the last three years in the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run and third in the BUPA Great Machester Run last year.
He went on to set a world junior 10,000m record at the Memorial Van Damme Golden league meeting in Brussels after an outstanding performance in the Athens Olympics as a teenager.
According to events athletes director Matthew Turnbull, Kiprop will give Kibet “a testing race over a very fast, flat course which will suit him.”
“Already, he is gearing himself up for next year’s Olympic Games where four years older, he is determined to improve on his display in Greece,” says Turnbull.
