Runner Prepares for Everest Marathon
TUESDAY, 23 OCTOBER 2007
The butterflies are starting to flutter for Te Anau physiotherapist Cathy Lewsley as she continues to prepare for the word’s highest marathon race on Mt. Everest in December.
Together with 16 others from her New Zealand delegation, she will head to Nepal next month. Lewsley will be racing together with good friend and fellow physio Lynne Clay from Hawea.
A 25-day familiarization period will take place for the 14 competing in the 90-strong field as they adjust to life at high altitude. The 42.6km race will start on December 5 at Gorak Shep near the Everest base camp, which is situated 5184m above sea level.
Runners will work their way downhill from Gorak Shep to Namche Bazaar.
Part of the Everest marathon’s mandate is to raise money to support health and educational projects in Nepal. More than 400,000 ($nZ1.099 million) had been raised through British-registered charity.
Lewsley will give half of the money that she raised to her selected New Zealand charity, the Make A Wish Foundation.
