The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Women's Marathon ended with a blast as Deena Kastor, Magdalena Lewy Boulet, and Blake Russel captured the top three spots. They are now qualified to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games to be held in China this coming August.
Kastor becomes the first woman to win three U.S. championships in the marathon - 2001, 2007, and 2008. She is the first woman, since Linda Somers (in 1993-1994), to win back-to-back titles.
Kastor’s winning time of 2:29:35 is the 41st fastest marathon ever run by an American woman. She also holds the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 10th , 12th, 14th, and 43rd fastest times. Kastor and Boulet ran the 2nd and 11th fastest Olympic Trials performances in US history.
Boulet seized second place with a winning time of 2:30:19. This record is the 53rd fastest marathon ever run by an American woman.
Kastor, Boulet, and Russel will be running through the streets of Beijing, China on August 17. Of the 181 marathon qualifiers, 146 of them are starters and 124 (69 percent) reached the finish line.
