African Athletics Final Event Wraps Up

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Despite the rain, thousands of fans went to the National Stadium - with thousands left outside - for the closing session of the 16th African Athletics Championships last Sunday, May 4.
Zemzem Ahmed dominated the women’s 3000m Steeplechase while Kenenisa Bekele won gold in the 5000m race. Pamela Chelimo had the eye-catching and breakout performance as she outraced Maria Mutola, a multiple World and African Champion.
Chelimo, 19, finished the 800m race in just 1:58:70, followed by Mutola who got a time record of 2:00:47 and Agnes Samaria at 2:00:62. Though Chelimo won against Mutola, she had not exceeded the 1996 record of Mutola which is 1:56:36.
