While most of the runners joined to win the gold in the recently concluded Boston Marathon, Marty Wesolowski from Wilbraham ran for Celia La Barbera, a four-year old child who suffers from Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2).
During Wesolowski’s 26.2-mile run, the girl has been his inspiration. He kept reminding himself that the marathon is nothing compared to the real-life battle of Celia.
NF2 is a disease in which tumors grow on the nervous system. No cure has been found yet for NF2. This drives Wesolowski, who is a medical student, to do a study on the said disease.
Wesolowski finished the race in 2 hours, 53 minutes, 51 seconds (2:53:51). He was the second local finisher. He was happy that he could be able to help raise money for the Children's Tumor Foundation. Wesolowski raised more than $7,600 for The Children's Tumor Foundation and donations kept coming even after the marathon.
