INDIANAPOLIS - Kenyans made history when Lamech Mokono and Valentine Orare finished the 2008 One America 500 Festival Mini-marathon at exactly the same time. The race was held last Saturday, May 3.

The race officials had to review the videotape and photographs before announcing the winner. After the review, they decided that Mokono and Orare would be declared as champions and would get the full first-place prize purse of $3, 500. Both men finished the 13.1-mile race in one hour, two minutes, and 53 seconds.

This is also the first time that Mokono, 27, and Orare, 25, joined the race. Mokono, though he felt like an underdog and knew that winners from the previous years were present, he was ready for the competition.

In the women division, 29-year old defending champion Jane Cherobon made it two wins in a row, finishing the race in one hour, 14 minutes, and 22 seconds (1:14:22).

In the wheelchair division, Toni Iniguez, a high school visual art, painting, and drawing teacher, took home the gold for the third time as he finished the race in just over 47 minutes. He received a check worth $1000 from the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Sports Program for his effort.
